About the DEI Committee

The NCNCA Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) committee was formed in the wake of the social unrest in 2020. For years, our cyclesport community has called for more work to make our racing scene more reflective of the diversity of our region. At the same time, race numbers in cycling have dwindled. When the suggestion for a DEI committee was put forward, many of us were shocked that we did not already have such a committee. Within weeks, the DEI committee was formed and began meeting to build group trust, exchange meaningful DEI dialogue, and start to address systemic problems facing our sport.

The NCNCA DEI group aims to make every person—regardless of color, race, creed, gender identity, economic status, etc.—feel welcomed and supported in the sport of bike racing. Our hope is that by making for a more equitable and enjoyable race experience for all, we will keep current racers excited while bringing new athletes to the fold. We are a volunteer collective of racers, parents of racers, promoters, officials, coaches, and cycling enthusiasts.

Our collective goals include:

  • Research to better understand the culture and demographics of our specific region and the challenges our community experiences with participation and inclusion.
  • Creating a “rider support” email hotline. Rider Support will be available for anyone seeking support including questions about racing, suggestions for improving the race experience, conflict resolution, and as a safe space to air grievances.
  • Create a network of support to break down the financial barriers many folks face in our sport. This will include partnering with local nonprofits, our USA Cycling DEI partners, race promoters, along with creating our own NCNCA inclusion fund.
  • Building community trust through presence at races and outreach to other bike related events.

Results from 2021 DEI survey can be found here (click through to advance slides).
